Andre Berto Ready To Take Floyd’s Belt
June 13, 2008
Unbeaten welterweight Andre Berto (21-0, 18KOs) is ready to achieve his dream on June 21 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis. For once, the WBC did the right. Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his retirement last Friday, and the sanctioning body officially stripped him of the title he really defended and placed it up for grabs when Berto, ranked at 1, meets Miki Rodriguez, ranked at 2. The fight will be televised by HBO.
“It’s crazy. It’s just nuts right now. When I think about it, I don’t really believe it,” Berto told Lyle Fitzsimmons. “It’s something I try and block out of my mind, as best as I can. But when I do think about it, it gives me a little more incentive to know that my goal is just one fight away. I’ve always approached fights with a focus, and to be put in this position all of a sudden is definitely a blessing.”
Capturing the WBC title will make him an immediate major player in one of the most talent rich weight classes in the sport. Potential future opponents include Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Antonio Margarito, Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, Joshua Clottey and Kermit Cintron.
