WWE SmackDown Results 5/30
May 31, 2008
Edge welcomes us to Smackdown and says that tonight we will be treated to highlights of the Undertaker’s illustrious WWE career and tonight the Undertaker will be on the Cutting Edge.
Smackdown opening video and pyro hits.
Michael Cole welcomes us to Smackdown and Batista is on his way to the ring.
Smackdown comes from Colorado Springs, Colorado this week.
Batista chants start before he speaks. He says he is a man of his word and he will hurt HBK at One Night Stand. He says this thing between him and HBK has gone way beyond personal. Vickie Guerrero comes out on the stage with the Edgeheads. She gets loud boos and Vickie sucks chants soon follow. Vickie points out that Batista may not be on Smackdown much longer with the draft coming up but says that Batista must beat HBK for the pride of Smackdown and to make her look like a good GM. Batista replies says its just about him and HBK, not about Smackdown or RAW. Hawkins interrupts and demands respect for the GM and tells Batista to shut up. Batista taunts Hawkins and Ryder to come down to the ring and make him shut up. Vickie stops and makes a match for tonight, the Edgeheads v Batista and a partner of his choosing.
First Undertaker career highlight of the night is his unforgettable 1990 debut at the Survivor Series. I’ll never forget the impact he made that night.
Match 1: US Champion Matt Hardy v Elijah Burke
Burke starts off on top, Foley makes a funny comment about Vickie being the ‘nails on the chalkboard of life’. Hardy tees off on Burke, Burke 4 ups Matt Hardy’s chin using his knuckles and then slaps on a sleeper. Hits a series of forearms to Hardy’s head. Hardy knocks Burke off the top rope but Burke then manages to hang Hardy on the top rope and get back to a sideheadlock. Hardy breaks the hold with a back suplex followed by a side Russian legsweep and an elbow to the back. His side effect is blocked but then he hits it and Burke kicks out to Foley’s amazement. Hardy then hits a quick twist of fate out of nowhere and gets the pin.
Winner: US Champion Matt Hardy
Eve Torres backstage with MVP who says that he is still the most talented member of the Smackdown roster. Noble interrupts and MVP makes a joke about Noble’s height with some short sized jokes which leads to Noble saying he will go to Vickie and get a match with MVP tonight. MVP isn’t impressed with the thought of having to compete tonight.
Match 2: Chuck Palumbo v Finlay
Foley comments on Palumbo’s hat saying Slash from Guns N Roses wants his hat back. Funny comment by Foley. Physical start to this match taking up from where they left off last week. Belly to belly on Finlay. Finlay side steps Palumbo’s charge and he hits the ringpost. Finlay locks in a fujiwara armbar and goes to work on the arm of Palumbo. Action spills to the outside and Finaly drop toe holds Palumbo into the steps. Palumbo fights back and hits Finlay with a stiff big boot. 2 count. Palumbo misses the legdrop off the 2nd rope and Finlay hits a nice clothesline on Palumbo which sends him over the top rope. Palumbo takes a chain from his motorcycle and hits Finlay causing a DQ finish
Winner: Finlay via DQ
Edgeheads are backstage with Vickie saying that Batista wont be able to find a partner for the match later on tonight. Jamie Noble walks in and asks for the match against MVP. Vickie has no problem granting the match and Noble cant believe the wish has been granted. He is wary of what Vickie did to him in the past with Big Show etc but Vickie wants Noble out of her office and he is delighted that he gets the chance to teach MVP a lesson tonight.
Next Undertaker highlight is the classic Hell In A Cell encounter between Undertaker and Mick Foley. To this day it is still an amazing match to watch. The bumps Foley took was incredible. Foley reminisces about the match and reminds us that the Undertaker will be on the Cutting Edge later tonight.
Match 3: CM Punk v WWE Tag Team Champion John Morrison
Miz is told to get to the back before this one starts and Morrison attempts the quick cover. Punk kicks Morrison to the head. Cole was acting the smartass with Foley during this one. I don’t like the way Cole treats Foley with disrespect sometimes. Cole should know his role and shut his mouth. Foley talks about Punk possibly cashing in Money in the Bank at One Night Stand saying it could be the ideal opportunity. Punk hits a nice bulldog on Morrison. A couple of close falls before Punk hits the GTS and gets a much need pinfall victory.
Winner: CM Punk
Match 4: Batista & Big Show v Edgeheads
Big Show is revealed as Batista tag team partner and he grabs Vickie’s wheelchair and wheels her to the back much to the delight of the fans. Batista starts off and then tags in Show who lifts Ryder from outside the ring into the ring with one arm. Quite amazing I must say. Batista in, then Hawkins is in and the Edgeheads double team the Animal until Batista hits a spinebuster and then Big Show and Batista chokeslam and Batista Bomb at the exact same time on Ryder and Hawkins. Great finish and its over.
Winners: Batista & Big Show
Next Taker moment is him winning the 2007 Royal Rumble lastly eliminating HBK. A great end to that Rumble match and one we wont forget in a hurry.
Match 5: MVP v Jamie Noble
Noble went to work on MVP legs before MVP fought back to drop knees on Noble’s sternum and stomping away on Noble. Shots to the kidney by MVP. Noble dropkicks MVP’s knees and goes to work on them from there. Noble does a tumble into MVP in the corner. Very innovative. Foley and Cole don’t know how to call it. 2 count. MVP hung Noble on the rope before charging out of the corner to hit Noble in the head for the 3 count.
Winner: MVP
Wrestlemania 23, Taker wins the World Heavyweight Title from Batista in the match of the night. I was there to witness it live and I can honestly say it should have been the main event. Going on 4th was a poor decision and it damaged the legacy of the Royal Rumble winner getting the main event spot at Mania.
Next week on Smackdown, Cousin Sal v Santino Marella. I presume this is on Smackdown because they want to edit Cousin Sal’s mistakes. Harsh but true.
Match 6: Vladimir Kozlov v Shannon Moore
USA chants broke out as they seem to every week. Kozlov swatted Moore like a fly before kicking Moore’s ribs on the top ropes and then a nice fall away slam before hitting the frontal DDT for the victory. Still undefeated.
Winner: Vladimir Kozlov
Match 7: Michelle McCool v Maryse (w/Deuce & Domino)
Michelle McCool won this with a nice submission hold. Cherry was very happy. A standard women’s match. Where is Natalya Neidhart and Victoria? Those women can wrestle on this brand.
Winner: Michelle McCool
Final video is from May of 2007 when Edge cashed in Money in the Bank to pin the Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Title. Not exactly a career highlight for the Undertaker.
The Cutting Edge with the Undertaker
Edge says that the Undertaker has been a black cloud hanging over his head ever since he came to Smackdown. Some mild Taker chants. Taker wont be part of the draft in 4 weeks because after he loses at One Night Stand he will be banished from the entire WWE. Edge talks about his TLC experience. Plays a video for the Undertakers TLC experience but nothing comes up because as Edge delights in telling us, Undertaker has no TLC experience. An Indiana Jones style video plays hyping Edge’s experience in TLC matches and building up Edge as the next World Heavyweight Champion at One Night Stand. La Familia wheel out a casket after Undertaker and Edge exchange words in the ring. La Familia beat down on Taker for a bit while Edge gets ready to pounce with a steel chair. Taker goes to chokeslam Chavo Guerrero on the casket when Edge hits Taker from behind with a chair. La Familia drag Taker into the ring and Edge hits a conchairto. They roll the Undertaker into the casket and Edge says that after One Night Stand Taker’s ‘Career is dead!’ He then climbs the ladder and stares at the World Title saying it symbolises his rise as the next World Champion. All of a sudden the lights go out and when they come back on, Taker is on the ladder with Edge, he punches Edge off the ladder, they fight in the ring until Taker grabs an Edgehead and gives him the Last Ride through the table. Taker and Edge have their final staredown before One Night Stand.
Edge/Vickie Storyline Spoiler?
May 31, 2008
– At the WWE stockholders meeting two weeks ago, one stockholder complained about the Edge & Vickie Guerrero storyline on SmackDown to Vince McMahon. The stockholder asked where WWE was going to draw the line on it. In what appears to be a hint to where it’s going, McMahon said that it was a love and relationship story, but that it may not turn out like one in the end. McMahon then went on a tangent saying how in real life, everyone isn’t all good or evil, but rather, shades of gray.
– At the stockholders meeting, McMahon was also asked about Congress possibly investigating the company. McMahon replied, “I doubt they’ll want to bring us in,” saying that if they do, it won’t be good for them because they’ll quickly find out that the company is “as clean as a whistle.”
– Regarding Triple H and the upcoming Marvel Studios movie Thor, the originally scheduled director of the film, Matthew Vaughn, won’t be producing it. Vaughn’s holding deal with the studio expired in December, but this news didn’t come out until a few weeks ago. Vaughn was firmly against casting Triple H for the lead role in the movie. The flick is scheduled to be released in a little more than two years on June 4, 2010.
